BASKETBALL (history)

Basketball is a limited contact sport played on a rectangular court. Most often played as a team sport with five players on each side, three-on-three, two-on-two, and one-on-one competitions are also common.  The game was invented in 1891 by Dr. Ja,es Naismith.

(November 6, 1861 – November 28, 1939) was a Canadian-American physical educator, physician, chaplain, sports coach and innovator^. He invented the game of bascketball at age 30 in 1891. He wrote the original basketball rules book and founded the university of cansas basketball program. Naismith lived to see basketball adopted as an Olympic demonstration sport in  and as an official event at the 1936 sumer olympics1904 in Berlin, as well as the birth of the national invitation tournament  (1938) and the NCAA  (1939).

Basketball is one of the world's most popular and widely viewed sports^. The NBA is the most popular and widely considered to be the highest level of professional basketball in the world and NBA players are the world's best paid athletes by average annual salary per player. Outside North America, the top clubs from national leagues qualify to continental championships such as the euroleague and FIBA americas league. The FIBA bascketball world cup is the major international competition of the sport and attracts the top national teams from around the world. Each continent hosts regional competitions for national teams, like eurobasket and FIBA americans championship.

The FIBA women's basketball word cup features the top national women's bascketball teams from continental championships. The main North American league is the WNBA, whereas the Euroleague women has been dominated by teams from the russian women's bascketball premier league.
